Town centre traffic schemes to continue over festive season
Measures to support social distancing and the reopening of high streets in towns across Somerset will remain in place throughout the rest of December and will be reviewed again in the New Year.
The temporary schemes introduced in June include pedestrianised zones and one-way systems and were initially funded by the Government and overseen by Somerset's Active Travel Group, which represents the five local councils, police and public health.
A further funding block - Tranche 2 - amounting to just over £450k for Somerset, was recently announced by the Government.
This funding is set up to enable more permanent measures to support walking and cycling in Somerset.
The schemes still running from Tranche 1 which will continue through December are:
- Wells, Market Place - closed to traffic.
- East Street Taunton - closure/pedestrianisation - remains in place but with access granted to Blue Badge holders for two hours day during December.
- Yeovil, Middle and High Street - pedestrianisation
- Bridgwater, Eastover/East Quay/Salmon Parade - pedestrianisation/ one-way system in place.
Once agreed, the schemes taken forward in Tranche 2 will be announced in the New Year and consultation will follow with communities and businesses.
