More about Benefits and Welfare Reform

Benefit changes that may affect you and your claim

Your claim assessed while you wait

The council's benefit section provides a streamlined process for the assessing of new claims, which means that your entitlement to housing and/or council tax support can be calculated while you wait.

Size Restrictions - Social Rented Sector

The Welfare Reform Act gives the Government the power to introduce new size criteria (also known as 'under-occupation penalty' or 'bedroom tax') for housing benefit claims in the social rented sector. The criteria will mean that any working-age household deemed to be under occupying their home will lose part of their housing benefit from April 2013.

The Benefit Cap

From 7th November 2016, the benefit cap is being reduced

Non-dependant deductions for Housing Benefit

Non-dependant means any person over 18 who normally lives with you on a non commercial basis such as an adult son, daughter, relative or friend.
