There are a large number of non-designated heritage assets in the district that are of local architectural or historic interest and importance.
Whilst these are not currently considered to be of sufficient interest to merit formal statutory designation by English Heritage, they undoubtedly add to the richness of the local built environment. In recognition of this interest, and in order to ensure that the character of these buildings is respected by development proposals affecting them, Mendip District Council, in conjunction with local town and parish councils, and amenity societies, has decided to produce a Local List of Heritage Assets of Historic or Architectural Importance.
The initial stage of this project is focusing on Mendip's five largest 'towns'; Shepton Mallet, Wells, Frome, Glastonbury and Street, before potentially rolling it out to surrounding villages and parishes.
A team of heritage enthusiasts has now been signed up to help coordinate the project and take nominations from residents.
Further information on the project including contact details for the local managers can be found in the council's:
If you would like to make a nomination, call or email your local manager with your name, address, telephone number, nominated building/structure and reason for nomination, or fill in the form which can be found under 'Documents' and send it to Local List, Heritage Conservation Team, Mendip District Council, Shepton Mallet, Somerset, BA4 5BT.
