Mendip charity gets a boost from council staff fundraising

Staff from Mendip District Council have been baking, quizzing and cycling to raise over £1700 for Mendip YMCA in 2018.

Every year staff from the district council nominate a charity of the year, in 2018 Mendip District Council supported Mendip YMCA with a series of events and initiatives over the twelve months, which has resulted in £1,787.53 being raised and donated to the Mendip based charity.

Mendip YMCA has been operating in Wells since 1892, the charity now delivers and supports a wide range of services, mostly for young people, across the whole of Mendip. The independent local charity works with the people of Mendip with their main focus on young people and specialising in housing and homelessness issues.

Michelle Payne, Marketing & Fundraising Manager, YMCA Mendip responded to the wonderful donation made by Mendip District Council by saying "We have always been so grateful for the continued support we receive from Mendip District Council and truly appreciated the additional benefit of being chosen as their Charity of the Year for 2018. Our services are not just about providing safe accommodation for vulnerable young people, but also to provide support and all round care that is so vitally important.  The staff at Mendip District Council did an amazing job raising £1787.53 for us and we would like to say a really big thank you to everyone who got involved in the many fundraising events they organised.

"We are very fortunate to have people in our community that want to help us make a difference and donations of any kind means so much; as they enable us to carry on providing the vital services we do. If anyone would like to know more about the work we do, or how they can support us, please visit'

Stuart Brown, Mendip District Council Chief Executive, said: "The amount raised by staff this year for our Charity of the Year, is fantastic, there have been a range of fundraising events and challenges taking place across the year, with staff from across the organisation involved.

"We have a good working relationship with Mendip YMCA with a number of our teams supporting the work that they do across our district, so it was great to be able to support them further with this donation from the team at Mendip District Council."

During 2019 the council staff will be supporting CLIC Sargent as the new charity of the year and already have plans for a vegan bake sale, cinema night, dress down days and more.
