Taxis and Private Hire Information

Most people believe that any vehicle that carries passengers for reward is a taxi, but strictly speaking there are two types of licensed vehicle hackney carriage and private hire vehicles.

Where we refer specifically to taxis - we usually mean Hackney Carriage Vehicle - Taxi.

We licence both types of vehicle and drivers licensed by us may drive both vehicle types under a Dual Use Driver's Licence. We also licence Private Hire Operator's Licence who may invite or make bookings for private hire vehicles.

We are also responsible for setting the pdf icon maximum fares [107kb] that can be charged by taxis, but we do not set the maximum fares for private hire.

Somerset County Council is responsible for taxi ranks, because they are sited on public roads. The implementation and maintenance of these ranks is their responsibility. However, we do liaise with them due to our relationship with those we licence in the taxi trade.
