Snowdrops and Street Food on offer in Shepton

6 February 2019

Shepton Mallet will be filled with snowdrops next weekend as the Snowdrop Festival takes over the town and the monthly Shepton Mallet Sunday Market also makes a return.

Shepton Sunday Market

The popular Sunday Market that runs on the third Sunday of the month, is back on Sunday 17th February, from its winter break, a month early this year to join up with the community event in the town.

Shepton Mallet was the home of James Allen, a self-taught horticultural and the first person ever to breed new varieties of snowdrops from wild plants, a feat which earned him the nickname of the 'Snowdrop King'. The Snowdrop festival is an event for the whole community and runs across the town on 16th and 17th February.

Everything from snowdrops, crafts, clothing and an array of food and beverages will be on offer at the market on Sunday which runs from 10am - 3pm. If you are visiting it will be a great place to grab some lunch, with a number of street food stalls and treats on offer.

That's Nacho Burrito is new to the Shepton Sunday Market and will be joined by, some of the regular Mendip Market traders, Pizza Rocket, Pop's Thai Kitchen, Somerset Smokehouse and the Nestcake Caravan are among some of the great treats on offer.

Cllr Nigel Taylor, Portfolio Holder for Neighbourhood and Community Health Services, said: "The Shepton Sunday Market has become a really established and popular event in Shepton events calendar. It made perfect sense to come back a month early this year so that we had the opportunity to link up with another community event in the town.

"It's great when we can link up with other events taking place, as it makes such a difference to the community in Shepton and really creates a buzz in the town."

The Horticultural Society who deliver the Snowdrop Festival will be hosting a marquee in the Market Place, they will be on hand to answer any questions and will be running a 'Question Time for Gardeners' at 11am.

The Frome Street Bandits will be playing in the Snowdrop procession as part of the festival and will return to the Market Place following the procession to entertain the shoppers at the market.
