Paying Your Rates

Details on how to pay your Non Domestic Rates (Business Rates)

Pay Online

Pay your Non Domestic Rates online

Pay by Direct Debit

A monthly Direct Debit from your bank account is usually the easiest method of payment. All instalments will be collected on the first of the month. If you wish to pay by this method, you can download a pdf icon Direct Debit form [72kb].

The completed form should then be returned to Mendip District Council, Business Rates Section, Shepton Mallet, Somerset, BA4 5BF (Do not send it to your bank - we will do that for you)

Post Office Payment Card

If you do not have a bank account, or would find it easier, you can pay by cash or cheque at ANY Post Office using a payment card provided by the Council. There is no fee for this service. If you do not already have a payment card please apply to the Council so that one may be issued

Cheque by Post

You can also pay by posting a cheque each month to the Council Offices at Mendip District Council, Cannards Grave Road, Shepton Mallet, Somerset, BA4 5BT. The cheque must be made payable to "Mendip District Council" and crossed "Account Payee Only" and you must write your Business Rates reference on the back.

Standing Order/Internet Banking Transfer

Payment can be made through your bank and via the Internet by simply quoting the Council's own bank account details. Payment is controlled by the ratepayer and unlike Direct Debit, instalments will not be requested automatically. The details that must be quoted are as follows:

Account Name: NatWest Head Office Collection Fund

Account Number: 00000000

Sort Code: 57-84-09

You must ensure that your Non Domestic Rates reference is quoted in the transaction to ensure correct allocation of your funds. If you wish to pay by this method, you can download the relevant form from the 'Useful Documents' section.

Credit/Debit Card Payments

Additionally you can make payment by Credit or Debit Card (Excluding American Express and Diners cards). Telephone 0300 303 8588 for payment by this method between, 8.00am - 6.00pm Monday to Friday and have your card at hand.

Business Rates Instalments

Payment of business rate bills is automatically set on a 10-monthly cycle. However, the Government has announced that it will legislate to allow businesses to ask for their business rate bills to be spread over 12 months to help with cash flow. The Government is putting in place regulations that will, with effect for the 2014-15 financial year, allow businesses to require their local authority to enable payments to be made through 12 monthly instalments. If you wish to take up this offer, you should contact us as soon as possible.

Overpayments

If you pay more than you should (for example because you have moved, altered or closed your business) then we will refund any overpayment promptly and in full. If you have been notified by the Council that your account is in credit you can apply for your pdf icon refund [50kb].
