The gift of parking!

24 November 2017

An early Christmas wish has been granted for shoppers and businesses in Mendip. Mendip District Council's Cabinet has agreed to once again to provide free all day car parking in the run up to Christmas and on New Year's Day.

Free Christmas parking has been running for many years and will include all of the council's 31 pay and display car parks, which will suspend charges for the entire day. The free period will start on Wednesday 20 December and will last until Monday 25 December and on New Year's Day.

The aim is to encourage shoppers to spend their money in the district's many and varied businesses during the Christmas period.

However, the council is warning shoppers that the time restrictions will still be enforced in areas where parking is only allowed for a specified time.

Motorists are advised to check price boards in car parks for restrictions. These time restrictions will remain in place to ensure that everyone has a fair chance of benefiting from free parking.  Please also note that during the Wells Christmas Market there will be no parking at Wells Market Place for the duration of the Christmas market, this will re-open on 24 December, where the one hour maximum stay limit will still be in place.

Cllr Nigel Taylor, Mendip District Council's portfolio holder for regulatory services, which includes car parks, said: "The aim of the free Christmas parking scheme is to help encourage shoppers into Mendip and spread trade across the day. We want to support Christmas shopping in Mendip and as a further measure of seasonal goodwill, to encourage drivers not to drink and drive, the council is offering free parking on New Year's Day."

Chris Davis, Centre Manager for Clarks Village, says, "We are delighted to offer our customers free parking on these days during the festive period and on New Year's Day, with the help of our partners at Mendip District Council.

"As we all know, anything that helps to take the pressure off of Christmas shopping is always appreciated and with our many seasonal events and activities over the coming weeks, we hope to welcome as many shoppers as possible. The gift of free parking means that our guests can take their time choosing presents from more than 90 of their favourite high street and designer brands in the Village, without the worry of their parking ticket expiring. From the Senior Management team at Clarks Village, we wish everyone a Happy Christmas and wonderful New Year."

Shoppers are also reminded that a number of Mendip's car parks already offer a free parking facility. Shepton Mallet's Great Ostry, Regal Road West and Petticoat Lane all offer one hour free parking. Goswell Road and Church Road in Street offer two hours' free parking.  Free parking is available in Catherine Street in Frome as well as one hour bays at Badcox car park.
