Changes to car parking in Mendip

21 May 2018

New parking arrangements are due to be put in place in Mendip this summer following a decision taken at Mendip District Council's Cabinet meeting on Monday.

Car Parks

The Car Park Charges Review 2018-22 was endorsed by Cabinet at the public meeting on Monday 21 May. The review included a review of tariffs for individual car parks and season tickets/permits.

The changes agreed at the public meeting will see tariffs increase by 10p for short stay car parks and 40p for long stay car parks, a number of tariffs will also be reduced to ensure charging is consistent across the district.

Season tickets/permits are also covered by the Car Park Charges Review, following the decision by Cabinet these are set to increase over a period of three years. The prices set for season tickets/permits allow for a 50% saving on the cost of parking for five days a week for 48 weeks of the year. A further amendment was made for officers to implement a scheme to allow for virtual permits to be purchased offering more flexibility and affordable options to car park users.

The decision to implement Sunday car parking charges in Frome and Shepton as part of the review were agreed. There will be a set fee of £2 across car parks in Frome and Shepton between 9am and 6pm on Sundays.

After listening to the community, following the feedback the council has received from the public and partners, it was also agreed that Sunday parking charges will be lifted in Frome when the Frome Independent Market is trading and in Shepton Mallet to coincide with the Shepton Sunday Monthly Market.

Mendip District Council engaged with town councils across Mendip and Chamber of Commerce on the changes at the beginning of April. There will be a further 21 day public consultation to be undertaken as part of the making the new Parking Order. All comments received as part of the consultation process were provided as part of the report to Cabinet.

Mendip District Council have not increased or reviewed its car parking charges since 2014. Season tickets/permits have not been reviewed since February 2012.

Cllr Nigel Taylor, Portfolio Holder for Neighbourhood Services and Community Health, said: "We know that parking charges are an emotive subject and most people will use one or more of the Mendip car parks across the district.

"It is important that we ensure we have a consistent charging policy across the district so that all car parks are maximized to support the vitality of the town centres.

"It is also important to make clear that this is the first review of charges in Mendip District Council Car Parks since the last review took place in 2014. Season tickets/permits have also not been reviewed across Mendip since 2012."

As part of the decision at Cabinet on Monday evening it was agreed that the car parking charges would be reviewed on a yearly basis going forward.

The council will continue to provide free parking for disabled badge holders, there will also be no change to the free evening parking which is in place across the district as part of this review. In a further amendment at the meeting, it was agreed that Badcox Car Park in Frome will not have any increase in charges.
