Stray/Lost Dogs

The Council does not have a Dog Warden patrolling the district, however, we use a contractor to collect captured and confined strays.

Stray Dogs

The Council's Stray Dog Service can only collect stray dogs if they are confined or secured within the Mendip area.The law requires dogs to wear a collar and identification tag with the owner's contact details, when out in public and in addition, the law now requires all dogs to be microchipped. If you find a dog that has a collar and tag, please try and return it to the owner. If the dog has no identification or you have been unable to return it to the owner, you may report it to the Stray Dog Service, providing that you have secured the dog in your possession.

Please note the Police are not responsible for managing reports of stray dogs.

How do I report a stray dog?

We will need the following information from you in order to arrange for the dog to be collected:

  • Your name and address
  • Your telephone number
  • Email address (if you have one)
  • The location where the dog was found and when
  • A description of the dog such as breed, colour, distinguising marks etc
  • Any signs of temperament/agression issues or injuries

Your details will be passed to the Stray Dog Service, who will contact you as soon as possible and arrange to collect the dog.

Lost Dogs

Please note that Mendip District Council do not have their own kennelling facility. Please also note that we unable to offer any concessions or scheduled payment plans for the settlement of kennelling fees.

If you have lost your dog, you can report it to the Council's Stray Dog Service. You may also like to check Mendip's Lost Dog Register using the following link - Lost Dogs in Mendip. This is updated regularly and shows dogs collected by the Council's Stray Dog Service and taken to kennels. All dogs collected are scanned for microchips to try and identify owners.

Every effort is made to return the dog to its owner before it is taken to kennels. If your dog is taken to kennels you can expect to pay at least £69 to retrieve it on the first day, and a further £16.50 each day thereafter.

Dogs can be collected from the kennelling facility between 10:00 and 13:00 and 14:00 and 18:00 7 days a week (tel: 01934 750352). Dogs not retrieved within 7 days will pass into the ownership of the Council and may be rehomed.

How do I report a lost dog?

Our Stray Dog Service will need the following information from you in order to report a lost dog:

  • Your name and address
  • Your telephone number
  • Email address (if you have one)
  • The location where the dog was lost
  • A description of the dog such as breed, colour, distinguishing marks etc
  • Any temperment/behavioural issues
  • Any specific medical conditions that may require treatment if your dog is found e.g. diabetic
  • Details of any microchip, collar and tag and any other relevant information
