Mendip District Council has been praised for its 'truly inspiring' partnership working and the 'commitment and dedication' of its staff, as part of a wide-ranging review of the local authority.

The review was carried out in the spring as part of a Corporate Peer Challenge, organised by the Local Government Association, which saw staff and councillors from other councils around the country spend several days at Mendip, finding out more about how the council delivers services, evaluating its ways of working and talking to staff, partners and stakeholders.

Mendip requested the peer challenge review be carried out, to ensure the authority was performing to the best of its ability and focusing on improvement.

The challenge team's positive feedback about Mendip included:

  • "A fantastic story of sustained improvement"

  • "The council's workforce is one of its key strengths and a great asset"

  • "Commitment and dedication of the Mendip staff group"

  • "Mendip clearly punches above its weight"

  • "The council plays a very proactive role within Somerset, across the Local Enterprise Partnership area [Devon and Somerset] and more broadly across and beyond the south west"

  • "We were blown away by the energy, enthusiasm and drive"

  • "Many of the partnership arrangements the council has led, fostered or committed to are truly inspiring"

  • "Mendip is a partner of choice"

Among the challenge team's recommendations for the council were to "further develop your approach to customer engagement, including more collaborative working with Town and Parish Councils" and to "continue work to deliver your budget".

Stuart Brown, Chief Executive of Mendip District Council, said: "This is an overwhelmingly positive report which reflects extremely well on Mendip's staff, who work so hard to deliver key services to the local area.

"I'm particularly pleased that the review team recognised the council's sustained improvement and our positive approach to partnership working, none of which could be delivered without the commitment and dedication of our staff and councillors."

Cllr Harvey Siggs, Leader of Mendip District Council, said: "I'm delighted with the peer group's findings, which highlighted Mendip as having a culture of innovation and learning, and as a council that is willing and able to take on and try new and different approaches.

"We have always prided ourselves on being an innovative council, one that is not afraid to take bold decisions to safeguard and improve the services we deliver to our residents.

"The findings of this review show that we are heading in the right direction as a council, continually identifying new ways to work with our partners and improving the services we deliver, putting our customers at the heart of everything we do."
