Mendip Council's Cabinet launches new Q&A forums

Mendip District Council's Cabinet is to hit the road to meet with local residents throughout the district and answer their questions about the council and its services.

The new 'Meet the Cabinet' sessions will take place in each of the area's four main towns - Frome, Glastonbury, Shepton Mallet and Street - and in the city of Wells.

The forums will take the format of question and answer sessions, with local residents asked to submit questions in advance on a range of key local issues.

The topics being covered are:

· How your council tax is spent

· Community safety (including the night-time economy)

· Housing

· Business development and the local economy

· Leisure facilities

· The place where you live (issues affecting your local environment/neighbourhood)

Each topic for discussion will be allocated approximately 15mins for questions.

Mendip District Council leader Harvey Siggs said: "The new Meet the Cabinet sessions have been launched to further strengthen the council's links with local communities and improve engagement with the people of Mendip.

"Local residents can already speak at Cabinet meetings and can of course contact their local councillor at any time, but we hope that by setting up Q&A sessions around the district we will be able to meet many people who might otherwise not attend a Cabinet or Council meeting.

"We are particularly keen to find out about those issues that are affecting our local communities to ensure that we are tackling the things that are of most importance to people in Mendip."

The dates and venues for the meetings, which all take place from 7pm to 9pm, are:

· Thursday 16th May 2013 - Shepton Mallet (Mendip District Council offices)

· Wednesday 22nd May 2013 - Glastonbury (Town Hall)

· Wednesday 29th May 3013 - Frome (Cheese & Grain)

· Wednesday 19th June 2013 - Wells (Town Hall)

· Monday 24th June 2013 - Street (Victoria Club)

Residents should submit their question before the events. This can be done by emailing chiefexec@mendip.gov.uk or calling 01749 341 205 / 206.

Questions need to be received no later than midday on the Monday before each meeting: Shepton Mallet - 13th May, Glastonbury - 20th May, Frome - 27th May, Wells - 17th June, Street - Wednesday 19th June.

People who have submitted a question are requested to attend their local event to ask their question in person.

Please note that questions on specific issues, for example, planning applications, will not be accepted.

The sessions are expected to prove very popular and admission will be on a first-come-first-served basis.
