Arranging a Funeral

Most funerals are conducted through a funeral director who can provide a complete service. Some people may prefer not to use a funeral director, which is legal.

Steps to arrange a funeral through a funeral director - burial or cremation;

  1. Select a funeral director
  2. Choose the cemetery that you would like to use - Street, Shepton Mallet or Frome
  3. Read the  pdf icon burial guidelines [567kb] and contact Mendip District Council for the rules and regulations for our cemeteries.
  4. Decide if the funeral will be a cremation or burial
  5. Advise the funeral director if you have a grave already purchased by the family that you wish to use
  6. The funeral director will contact the relevant cemetery department and vicar, if necessary, to provisionally book a date and time.
  7. The funeral director will complete all necessary paperwork with you to arrange a funeral
  8. If the grave space has not been purchased prior to the funeral this can now be done, again the funeral director will have the relevant application form.  If you do not wish to purchase the grave no memorials will be allowed. Please see purchasing a grave.
  9. The grave will be prepared by our contractors
