Bus Shelters

Mendip District Council cleans and maintains over one hundred steel framed glazed bus shelters in towns and rural areas.

Car Parks - Parking Fines/Excess Charge Notice

Mendip District Council issues parking fines/excess charge notice in car parks only and does not operate any on Street Parking Schemes.

Car Parks and Transportation

Mendip District Council has 44 car parks. Of these 9 are free, 4 are residents only, the remainder are pay & display. Charges and operating times vary between car parks.

Community Transport Schemes

Community Transport is available for people who cannot use public transport due to a disability or do not have access to public transport.

Fly-tipping

The dumping of waste (fly-tipping) is a serious environmental problem which Mendip are dedicated in combating, it is illegal and punishable by a fine of up to £2,500. Dumping is unsightly, hazardous.

Lighting on Council Owned Land and Footpaths

Somerset County Council is responsible for the design, installation and maintenance of street lighting on adopted roads and footpaths.

Litter (Street Cleansing)

We are responsible for the sweeping of streets and removal of litter.

Litter Bins

We provide litter bins throughout the District to allow you to dispose of your litter. Bins in busy areas may be emptied twice daily; others, in quieter locations, may only be emptied once a week. We do not normally provide litter bins in laybys - this is to encourage motorists to take their own litter home.

Mendip District Council provide public conveniences in all major towns in the district.

Repairs to Council Owned Roads and Footpaths

Mendip District Council owns a small number of footpaths and rear access lanes in housing estates that used to be Council owned.

Road Closures and Diversions

Highways closed to general traffic by a traffic regulation order issued by the highway authority at Somerset County Council.

Road Closures for Special Events

Road Closures for special events are provided under the Town Police Clauses Act 1847 Section 21. These events can vary in size from a small Village Fete to a large Carnival, Festival or Procession. In order to hold an event on a Public Highway a Road Closure Order is required. 8 - 10 weeks notice is required.

A pothole is where the surface of the road has been eroded and a hollow has formed. Somerset County Council, as Highway Authority, has responsibility for the maintenance and repair of the Highway.

Street Nameplates

We have a statutory duty to provide and maintain street name plates. Nameplates on newly built developments are provided by the developers in the first instance and maintained by the District Council thereafter.

Mendip District Council carry out street naming and numbering of new properties, developments and roads.
