NEW laws banning outside drinking in specific public places come into force in Glastonbury next Friday September 3rd.
Mendip District Council, under the Criminal Justice and Police Act 2001, is enforcing powers that carry fines of up to £500 for individuals convicted of drinking alcohol in the following areas:
High Street, Market Place, Magdalene Street, St Dunstan,s Car Park, The Armoury, Abbey Park, Bere Lane/Butleigh Road Recreation Ground, Alleyway adjacent to St Mary,s RC Church, Heritage Court, St Benedict,s Close, Benedict Street from Market Place to King Arthur Public House, Northload Street from Market Place to St John,s Square, Northload Street Car Park and service area, St John,s Square, St John,s Car Park, St John,s Churchyard, Church Lane to Norbins Road Car Park, Norbins Road Car Park, Archers Way from High Street to Library, Butt Close including Butt Close Car Park, Wells Road from Butts Close to High Street, Lambrook Street from High Street to Launder Close, Silver Street, Silver Street Car Park and Victoria Buildings.
Dennis Buffrey is Mendip,s Portfolio Holder with responsibility for Area Regeneration. He said:
"Our commitment to the people of Mendip is to provide cleaner, safer streets and we have worked in close partnership with the Police to introduce this order, which was agreed by full council in May.
"We are all proud of the area in which we live, and we will not tolerate drinking that causes offence to others."
This view was echoed by Inspector Rob Dean of Avon and Somerset Police, who added:
"The provision of an alcohol exclusion zone will contribute greatly to reducing incidents of anti-social behaviour and nuisance in Glastonbury town centre. We are pleased to have been involved with Mendip District Council and Glastonbury Town Council with this initiative right from the beginning. This is a fine example of partnership working at its best."
