Views sought on Beckington

02 July 2010

Historic buildings, important trees and distinctive chimney stacks are just some features highlighted in Beckington's Conservation Area.

Mendip District Council has carried out a conservation area appraisal in Beckington and is seeking residents' views.

Jayne Boldy, Mendip District Council's conservation officer, said: "The Beckington's Conservation area has a wealth of traditional buildings with interesting features revealing the village's heritage. The appraisal document will be an invaluable tool when considering development proposals within the conservation area."

The unchanged conservation area includes some of the following characteristics:

o Important trees throughout the village providing skyline features, frames to views and complements to the architecture

o Large coherent rows of historic buildings in Bath Road, Frome Road and Goose Street.

o A number of well designed 19th century shop fronts.

Beckington and Selwood district councillor, Cllr Stan Wilson, said: "Beckington has a number of distinctive character areas and a large number of houses displaying a range of building periods and architectural styles which we all value. The Village has no less than 85 Listed Buildings.

"The Conservation Area Appraisal is a significant document since once endorsed by Mendip it can be a material planning consideration when the Planner Officers assess future development applications within the conservation area.

"This latest draft appraisal enhances the 1996 document and affords everyone the opportunity to comment on the report before it is finalised and submitted for approval. It also seems like a good excuse to enjoy the hospitality of Mes Amis, The Woolpack or the Foresters to view the document!"

Copies of the draft appraisal document are available to view through the parish council, in the village at The Woolpack, The Foresters Arms and Mes Amis. The council offices in Shepton Mallet will also have copies or alternatively you can download a copy from the conservation areas page on the council's website www.mendip.gov.uk .

Cllr Ron Forrest, portfolio holder for Economy and Community, said; "As a council we are committed to enhancing Mendip as a place to live and we would encourage as many of Beckington's residents as possible to take a look at the appraisal and contact the council with their views.

"Mendip's heritage conservation team work hard to ensure that the heritage of our district is preserved in the correct manner and this can only happen with the support of residents."

Mendip District Council's heritage conservation team will be taking feedback until Monday July 26th, all comments and suggestions are welcome on the appraisal, please visit www.mendip.gov.uk for more information.
