Frome: Garsdale Re-development Area (Saxonvale)
This 12-hectare brownfield site lies to the east of Frome's town centre and south of the River Frome, it also includes Saxonvale and land to the north of Garston Road. Most of the site is in multiple, private ownership, with parcels of land under Mendip District Council and the South West Regional Development Agency ownership. Much of the site is former industrial and rail land and is now derelict or has been cleared. Other parts are being used for retail and industrial purposes. It is considered that some relocation is needed to enable comprehensive redevelopment of the whole area.
The Council is working in partnership with landowners and perspective developers to advance redevelopment proposals. Future uses could include housing, employment and leisure with new public open spaces.
A Planning Brief and Design Codes were produced in partnership between Mendip District Council, the SW Regional Development Agency and a team of consultants headed by Gillespies. These documents have been adopted by the council and now form a framework for high quality and cohesive development proposals. They are being used to assist in the determination of all planning applications for this area.
In the western part of the area is known as Saxonvale. A planning application package has been submitted by development company Terramond - this application is currently under consideration. In the eastern area, Bloor Homes Ltd has been granted planning permission for a housing development with some mixed-use elements.
