Building Control - Party Wall etc. Act 1996

The Act came into force on 1st July 1997.

It provides a framework for preventing and resolving disputes in relation to:-

  • party walls
  • boundary walls
  • excavations near neighbouring buildings

Anyone intending to carry out work (anywhere in England and Wales) of the kinds described in the Act must give Adjoining Owners notice of their intentions.

This Act is not enforced by the Council nor can the Council give advice on the application or use of the requirements within this Act.

Such advice should be sought from a Party Wall Surveyor.
